Research Triangle Park, North Carolina (March 5, 2010)--Rely® herbicide from Bayer CropScience will be available in a new, more powerful formulation, Rely 280, for 2010.

The new Rely 280 formulation, approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and California Department of Pesticide Regulation, also will be offered at a reduced price compared to the previous formulations.

Rely 280 is an alternative, non-selective chemistry for post-emergent weed control in tree, nut, vine and several berry crops. It delivers rapid, nonselective control of emerged broadleaf weeds and grasses, including those resistant to glyphosate and other herbicide classes.

“Rely 280 herbicide has a tremendous fit for areas with hard-to-control weeds,” said Andy Hurst, product manager for Rely herbicide. “It really smokes weeds, but also provides good crop safety. And this year it’s an even better value for growers.”

Hurst said Rely 280 uses a unique mode of action compared to other commonly used herbicides, making Rely 280 ideally suited for weed resistance programs. It also is a contact herbicide, meaning it does not move into plant tissue.

“This contact-only activity makes Rely 280 tough on weeds, but easy on mature trees, vines and bushes,” Hurst said. “It’s also easy to handle, mix and apply, without any special equipment, permits or posting required.”

Rely 280 is labeled for several crop and non-crop uses including apples, tree nuts, grapes, bushberries and other berries, farmsteads and as a potato vine desiccant. The label also includes uses for canola, corn, cotton and soybeans designated as LibertyLink®.

Rely 280 is a non-restricted chemistry, making it easier to handle and apply. Rainfast within 4 hours of application, Rely 280 has a re-entry period of 12 hours and a pre-harvest interval of 14 days.
