Posted 14 July 2006. Crop Management. New Clearmax Herbicide Offers Enhanced Broadleaf Weed Control in Clearfield Wheat System BASF Corporation. Research Triangle Park, NC (June 19, 2006) - Wheat growers now have a new herbicide option, with enhanced broadleaf weed control, for use on their CLEARFIELD® Production System wheat acres. Recently approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a limited supply of Clearmax™ herbicide will be available for application on winter wheat this season. “Clearmax is good news for the increasing number of growers who count on the CLEARFIELD wheat system for cleaner and more marketable grain at harvest,” said Jason Ward, CLEARFIELD Market Manager with BASF. “Clearmax gives these growers a great weed control option – one with exceptional grass weed control plus more broadleaf control in a one-pass system.” With its dual action (based on the active ingredients imazamox and MCPA), Clearmax controls problem grass weeds such as downy brome, jointed goatgrass, ACCase resistant foxtail, wild oats and volunteer cereals, as well as the common broadleaf weeds, including common lambsquarters, volunteer canola and mustard. “With the introduction of Clearmax herbicide, the CLEARFIELD system offers a strong value proposition for wheat growers – especially those in the Central Plains who will be planting the higher-yielding, secondgeneration CLEARFIELD winter wheat varieties available from seed companies this year,” said Ward. Beyond® herbicide will also continue to be available as a weed control option in the CLEARFIELD wheat system. CLEARFIELD varieties were developed using traditional plant breeding techniques and meet the global demand for non-GMO grains. Since its introduction four years ago, CLEARFIELD wheat acres have grown steadily across the country. To preserve the long-term efficacy of the CLEARFIELD wheat technology, growers are required to follow good stewardship practices that help prevent weed resistance. These stewardship practices require growers to purchase certified CLEARFIELD wheat seed every year from an authorized CLEARFIELD seed retailer. Stewardship requirements include not saving seed, regular crop rotation and use of herbicides registered for use in the CLEARFIELD wheat system – now including Clearmax. Ward encourages growers to carefully read the terms of the stewardship agreement and consult their retailer or BASF representative should they have any questions.
